At the Altar
The celebration of the Eucharist and the administration of the sacraments — the source from which every other labour draws, and the end to which each returns.
Rev. Fr. Bosco Antony Ryan
Ordained in 2002, and for twelve years a Teacher of Catholic Faith to seminarians, religious and lay students. This is the shape of a vocation that has moved between the altar, the lecture hall and the desk without ever leaving any of them.
The Vocation
Fr. Bosco Antony Ryan belongs to the Archdiocese of Madras–Mylapore, the ancient Church of South India that keeps the tomb of the Apostle Thomas. He entered Sacred Heart Seminary, Chennai, in 1997, took up philosophy for two years and theology for four, and was ordained to the sacred priesthood on 6 April 2002.
Priesthood, for him, has never been separable from study. Two years after ordination he returned to the lecture hall — this time as a student of spirituality at St. Peter's Pontifical Institute in Bengaluru, where he completed first a licentiate and then, in 2011, a doctorate in theology.
Grace does not argue a person into the Church. It finds them — and then asks what they will do with the rest of their life.
Both of his theses turned on one figure: St. John Henry Newman. The licentiate examined Newman's spirituality and its relevance for contemporary life. The doctorate set Newman's conversion beside the conversion of St. Paul, looking for the elements they share and what those elements still demand of Catholic spirituality today. The research became a book, published in Delhi in 2021.
From 2011 he carried that work into the classroom, teaching for twelve years at the Indian Institute of Spirituality in Bangalore and at MMI Theologate, Pazhanjur, Chennai. Eleven distinct courses passed through his hands in those years — the Trinity, eschatology, the sacraments, the theology of religions, the New Age movement, and the spiritual traditions of both the West and of India.
He serves today as a Permanent Teacher at the Sacred Heart Institute of Theology, which is affiliated to St. Peter's Pontifical Institute, Bangalore, and is based at the Archbishop's House on Santhome High Road in Chennai.
